BAYONET, British, Enfield, Martini-Henry, Mark I, C19th

Straight steel blade with wide, deep, groove of 21cm on both sides. Simple quillon with ring on opposite side. Blade marked at base crown over V.R over /88 (1888); mark (other side): ‘arrow up, WD…E45’; edge of blade marked crown over E. over 60 and crown over E over 38. Hilt textured with all over diamond cross hatching and marked .10 – on edge ‘3’ & crown over E over 38. On other side ‘two arrows vertically pointing at each other’ and on edge under quillon A.I. Proof mark E is Enfield. Pattern 1887. Reign of Victoria.
