RIFLED MUSKET, Enfield pattern 1853, .577 calibre, 1857

Muzzle loading, percussion cap (and probably buckshot cartridge - see Roads, C.H., 1964 'The British soldier's firearm, 1850-1864', H. Jenkins, London: p. 159). Sights: fore - ribbed block, rear - removed. Proof mark - worn away on barrel. Lock plate: crown/ VstarR. (Roads, plate 129, Liege). '1857' in script, crown/ broad arrow, P/ 19, crown. Stock: Triple-lined circle enclosing broad arrow/indecipherable date. (Liege, Roads p75). Over stamped with Pimlico store mark of '1863'. Also date stamp '18'(?). 2nd Class weapon for militia and volunteers. Behind trigger guard: 'P16', 'crown/ L/ 12', 'P16', 'crown/ L/ 10'. Two bands (solid screw type) 'crown/15'. Fore band missing. Brass trigger - plate, incorporating steel sling swivel, brass side-cups, nose-cup and butt plate. W.A.E.F. '222' on butt plate. Museum No: stamped inside butt plate and on end of stock. 'JW' stamped under brass plate. Appears to be converted to fowling piece. 'M. REIDY' stamped on stock behind side-cup.
