Muzzle loading, percussion cap (and probably buckshot cartridge - see Roads, C.H., 1964 'The British soldier's firearm, 1850-1864', H. Jenkins, London: p. 159). Sights: fore - ribbed block, rear - bridged. sighted to 1000 yards, crown/16. W.A.E.F. 260. Liege proof mark 'E' in script superimposed and 'P6' on LHS of barrel. Lock plate : stamped crown/VstarR (Roads, C.H., 1964 'The British soldier's firearm, 1850-1864', plate 129 identifies star between V & R as Liege mark; see also p77). '1857' (in script), Crown/broad arrow, 'P' over '19', crown. Stock: Triple lined circle enclosing broad arrow and indecipherable year of manufacture (Roads, p75 identifies as Liege). Over stamped with Pimlico store mark of 1864. 2nd Class weapon - for volunteers and militia. Marks behind trigger guard indecipherable. Furniture: 2 bands (fore-band missing). Solid screw type. Brass trigger-plate incorporating steel slung swivel. Brass side-cups, nose-cap and butt-plate. Rear band stamped crown/12. Middle band stamped crown/15. W.A.E.F./260 stamped on brass butt plate. Museum number stamped on inside of butt plate and end of stock. BR stamped on inside of butt plate.
