Six templets of various profiles. Made of wood. H.1994.95.6 is made of two pieces of wood. Templates (or templets) were used to set the cutting irons of moulding planes to the required dimensions of the cut. eg. If cutting the 'tongue' and 'groove' of a board, setting the width and depth of the tongue and groove by means of a templet ensured consistent and uniform dimensions always. Thus, a groove cut at one job would recieve the 'tongue' of a board cut at another job at another time. These templates were used to ensure uniformity of work from one day to the next. When a rebate was required the depth and width of the blade of the plane could be automatically set to maintain this uniformity. Without such templates, no window sash or floorboard would fit properly - especially work from different workmen.
