RELOADING TOOL

H1992.98

Reloading tool. This is a tool for removing the fired cap from an empty cartridge case. This tool is only appropriate for use in removing Berdan type caps. A fired case is placed in the hole in in the lower arm of the "pliers" and locked into place by the locking lever. The middle arm containing the decapping "gouge" is lowered down to contact the fired cap in the base of the cartridge case. When the upper arm is pressed down it contacts the "gouge" pin which is driven into the cap, piercing it at an angle. Still holding the middle and upper arms tightly in one hand, and the lower arm in the other, the arms are pulled apart. The fired cap remains on the "gouge" pin as it is withdrawn. The cartridge case is now ready to be re-primed, refilled with powder and a new bullet inserted. Each arm is marked "12 mm" (.44inch) This reloading tool belonged to Otto Lipfert, WA Museum taxidermist 1894-1942 See H92.0097 H92.0099 Serial No. .......... Proof Marks ....................
