ph METER (per hydrogen IONS). Used for testing the acidity or alkalinity of soil or liquids etc. "7" is neutral. Therefore below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline. One achieves the balance one desires by either adding an alkali or acid to the deficient soil or liquid. Used by placing sample in glass container in door on LHS of meter. A probe electrode is placed into the sample and a reading taken. Used by the School of Agriculture, UWA prior to 1950. Marks: Top - "MODEL pH METER / N.L. JONES - MELBOURNE". (in white paint "SL/2", in dymo tape "AG 0710". (Also long list of instructions for use). Back: "Serial No / 5057" (again a long list of instructions for testing and an address for service. "N.L. JONES SCIENTIFIC / INSTRUMENTS , 195 BAY RD / SANDRINGHAM S8, / VICTORIA AUSTRALIA".
