a. Box label reads 'THE A.L WORDMAKER / Box 3 / FOR INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE IN THE MAKING AND RECOGNIZING OF SIMPLE WORDS / AS AN AID TO READING' / BOX 3 contains 6 Cards printed both sides. The slide for Card 1 contains the final "e" / which makes the main vowel sound long; the others have fixed consonant parts, and / movable slides with vowels, the whole enabling 180 familiar words to be formed. / E. J. ARNOLD & SON LTD. / GLASGOW LEEDS BELFAST / Printed in Great Britain'. It also has the price 'R 4/-' written in pencil on the top right corner of the label. The box is cardboard, covered in brown paper, with a yellow label on top. b. 6 rectangular cards with 2 sliding pieces of cardboard stapled together to form a moveable collar around the card. The slide has either one or two holes to enable the letters underneath to be read in conjunction with the letter printed on the slide. One side of the card and slide has letters printed in blue, the other is black. They are numbered from 1 to 6. The toys were used by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to Teacher's College in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A. in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She also made and purchased a large collection of puppets which were used as teaching aids. These are accessioned under numbers H88/613 to H89/307 (not inclusive).
