LICENCE PLATE, Gas producer
H1988.721
License plate, consisting of a strip of heavy metal, stamped with "LICENCE NO. 870", with the name of the company, "DWYER D.A.P", attached above it, made from twisted wire, painted red. Licences were issued by the Minister of Supply during the 2nd World War for the purchase of steel, which was in short supply. This particular licence, no.870, relates to the manufacture of Gas Producers which were built in units on the Dwyer farm, east of Northam. Because of the short supply of metal, the maker's name had to be fashioned from wire, not, as was usual, from sheet metal.
