Khaki, cloth-covered licence, Commonwealth emblem and "SEAMAN'S LICENCE No 7856" on front cover. Inside cover lists reasons for the cancellation of a licence. Details page reads "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA / TRANSPORT WORKERS / (SEAMAN) REGULATIONS / SEAMEN'S LICENCE / No 7856 / DATE 14.2.1938". Details section includes name - "MURPHY SAMUEL GEORGE", height "5'8"", age "33", eyes "HAZEL", hair "BLACK", complexion "DARK". Issued by the licensing officer in Sydney. The licence authorises Murphy to work as a seaman for a period up to 31 August 1938 and thereafter when the licence is renewed. His address is listed as "22 KEIRA STREET / PT KEMBLA" and the date, 14 Feb 1938. Sam was a friend of Joan and Victor Williams at Fremantle. As part of a government retraining scheme in 1940 Sam became a boilermaker and would often solder or weld tins and scrap metal to fashion boxes and other utensils both for creative pleasure or his own use. In his memory, Joan has kept some of his work.
