SAUCER
CH1981.363
White body with clear glaze. Bat-printed (in black) pattern of figures in a river landscape. Pattern confined to centre of saucer with simple gilt rim. Deep sided with no well in centre for holding cup. No marks. Design and the method of its application plus style of cup suggest Spode. Seems to be the same pattern series as Number 557 illustrated page 257 in Whiter, L. Spode. See also pages 175, 182-3, and 85. Pattern number 557 suggests the above date. Several defects in the body suggest that this may have been a 'second' and hence the use of the cheaper process of bat printing. See page 175.
