5 ITEMS CHINESE COSTUME, Mandarin

CH1975.596.a-e

Addition 10.2.1976. Information supplied by Mr Gordon Suckling:
(a) Gown: A genuine dragon robe in good condition. Worn by a lower caste Mandarin in the 19th century. Robe features hoof-shaped sleeves, nine embroidered dragons. Embroidered work, though coarse, is vigorous. Copper or brass gilt thread is used.
(b) Skirt: yellow and black silk. Very fine embroidery. Floral design woven into silk. An excellent example of Chinese handcraft at its best, representing many hours of painstaking work.
(c) Skirt: brown and black silk, with plum or peach blossom design. Probably hand woven. The workings do not display quite the same skills as (b).
(d) Platform boots: worn by Chinese males.
(e) Hat: Worn by Mandarin. Top button, which would have revealed the owner's rank, is missing.
