Manchu lady's robe.
(a) Skirt: red silk with sky blue lining. Embroidered by hand around edges and in two large panels front and back. Peonies in laid stitch. Blue, red, green, yellow, white. Black silk edging. Coarse cotton waistband.
(b) Coat: blue figured silk. Hand-embroidered in laid stitch (silks). Flowers predominantly red, pink and yellow raised and corded motifs front and back. Stylized dragons (or insects), peonies - reds, blues, and yellow. Large sleeves with fold-back cuff, embroidered. Red silk with wide black border. Hand-embroidered in blue and white. Row of embroidered tape. Robe edged down front and bottom with black silk embroidered in blues and white and gold thread. Buddhist symbols. High collar, fastening with one gilt button and one silk knot. Fastens right shoulder with two round gilt buttons and under right sleeve. Red lining. Identified by Gordon Suckling, August 1978.
