DOLMAN, 1880s

CH1970.47

Dolman, red wool densely embroidered in many colours with cone motifs, probably made from an embroidered Indian shawl; three-quarter length; gored at back to accommodate a bustle; puffed shoulders; 6 hooks and eyes at front; lower half of front edges, hem and sleeves trimmed with colourful silk fringe; lined with quilted pale blue silk satin.
See Cunningtons, 'Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century', p. 528. Recatalogued 2.1.85.

Information from Gordon Suckling:
Cashmere, hand-embroidered (not woven). Made up from a paisley shawl. Probably on Amli shawl [Amli means that the shawl is made up of pilas - quite odd shapes].
