SHAWL
CH1978.114
Needle embroidered shawl or "amli"* shawl. Border of individual woollen squares (some may be cashmere), with silk embroidery. Body of closely embroidered sections joined together. Pattern of small cones etc., predominantly red, yellow and blue. Worked on black ground. Large section of embroidered section sewn onto another large piece of plain black cloth so that black cloth is left uncovered to form a pattern. May be a 'patchwork' shawl although this term may only refer to loom woven shawls. Ref. John Irwin (1955), 'Shawls', pp. 3-4, 14.
*'Amli' means that the shawl is made up of 'pilas' - quite odd shapes.
