DHI5404 - Copper/brass

Fourteen pressed metal/ brass type buttons and a small china button were reported and handed over by Ross Mack, DEC Marine Park Ranger at Denham. The buttons were found together in a pile ‘as if placed there by a child’. Two of the buttons, a small and a large size have the same crown surrounded by a laurel design as if from a uniform. Both have the same marking on their reverse side ‘STOKES & SONS MELB’.

Test Pit Sample
Surface layer of soil mostly compacted red clay dust. Some evidence of oil stains and a large amount of metal artefacts recovered. There was also some charcoal and slag and the metal artefacts increased in density towards the bottom.

Test Pit Sample
Soil was a sandy grey with a thin deposit of mortar/lime running through it. This layer also contained small fragments of red brick in parts. Some large metal railway sleeper pegs were found along with pieces of glass and seashells.

Test Pit Sample
Soil was dark brown sandy clay containing a large quantity of metal. Some pieces of green and purple glass were also recovered. A large quantity of slag was found, especially around a rusty lime deposit. At the base of the unit the soil became yellow sandy lime stone and contained no artefacts.

Test Pit Sample
Soil was north light grey and brown sand. Oil and charcoal residues are present. At the base of the unit there is a heavy concentration of blue metal that has been darkened by heat or oil. Mixed amongst the blue metal are a number of pieces a slag. Soil at base was dark grey sand.

Test Pit Sample
This unit contained a high concentration of slag. The soil around the slag is compacted yet fragile and crumbles easily. Very few artefacts other than the slag were found in this unit, those that were recovered were pieces of metal.
