The wreck was located in 1973 on
the north side of Woodman Point in
Cockburn Sound, by members of the
Underwater Explorers Club (UEC) who
were conducting an underwater line
search as part of their wreck research
programme.
Archival research revealed that
James Matthews was a snow-brig of 107
