Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

Two large adjoining fragments of sacrificial planking (air-dried). Iron corrosion on exterior face of iron sheathing nail heads, head impressions on surface, closeley spaced (0.040-0.070 centre-to-centre distance), in diagonal or alternating pattern. Nail shafts of sheathing nails, square in section. Interior covered by goat hair. Sawmarks visible on interior surface. This plank was sawn by a wind-driven sawing mill. The sawmarks are very straight and regular, run perpendicular to the length of the timber.

Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

The Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) sailed from Texel bound for Batavia (Jakarta), under Pieter Albertsz carrying trade goods and eight chests of silver to the value of 78,6000 guilders. On 28 April 1656 the Vergulde Draeck was wrecked just south of Ledge Point. 75 of the 193 made it to shore.
