Ship's timber artefact recovered from Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

Fragment of hull planking with two partial treenails preserved plus one partial treenail hole along its edge (latter is worn out), and nail hole (square in section). Sheathing nail holes preserved on one face of planking, square in section, closely spaced in diagonal or alternating pattern. Plus two smaller fragments that join to this timber. No preserved nail holes of sacrificial planking on either side of these two smaller fragments.

Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

The Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) sailed from Texel bound for Batavia (Jakarta), under Pieter Albertsz carrying trade goods and eight chests of silver to the value of 78,6000 guilders. On 28 April 1656 the Vergulde Draeck was wrecked just south of Ledge Point. 75 of the 193 made it to shore.
