CUP AND SAUCER

CH1981.399.a-b

Blue-grey body, especially pronounced on saucer. Clear glaze, fairly thickly applied, and craze free. Numerous black pit marks in glaze, inside cup. 'Japan' pattern in underglaze blue with overglaze red, grey and gilding. No marks. Nairn has attributed to Coalport factory and says it is pattern number 446. This number indicates a datebetween 1800 and 1810. Cup is certainly the plain style of this period and 'Japan' patterns were commonly used at this time. Porcelain body was said to be like a hard-paste.
