Sori: 3.6 cm, torii
Sugata: shinogi tsukuri, iori mune
Nakago: 19.9 cm, one mekugi ana, ubu
Kissaki: chu
Hada: itame, with some masame
Hamon: sugu midare ba
Horimono: bo-hi

Date: c. early 18th century

This katana blade was made by the swordsmith Kiyosane, of the Nio group, of Suo Province in Southern Honshu. The blade has been repolished, and the extreme curvature and open grain indicate it may have been retempered. The signature reads: ‘Kiyosane of the Nio school, resident of Choshu Province (made this)’.

Saya: black lacquer over wood, with
Tsuka: white same bound with black ribbon
Fuchi/kashira: patinated copper nanako background with waves and gilt dragons
Menuki: dull lead/pewter castings of chrysanthemums, possibly replacements
Tsuba: patinated copper, of naga-maru-gata shape, Ishime background with gilt dragon whose coils and claws appear on the reverse side.
