This is a katana blade made during the Showa era.

Type: BUKE ZUKURI

Saya: missing

Tsuka: small grain same, bound with brown cotton, over wood

Fuchi/kashira: fuchi of black lacquer, kashira of plain iron
Menuki: flat iron disks

Tsuba: missing

Overall length: 85.8 cm
This style of mounting is often associated with the Satsuma Rebellion period (1877), when many arsenals were manufacturing practical fighting weapons from ‘odds and ends’ to arm the common soldiers of the rebels. Swords mounted in this cheap makeshift way are not uncommon, however this hilt was probably fitted in the post-World War II period by a collector.
