Blade; KATANA type.
Tempered edge [HAMON]: GONOME MIDARE also described as SUGUBA MIDARE with YO, also chogi and go-no-me
No grain in steel MASAME in places, mainly MUHADA but forging marks evident. Slight scratches, good polish. Hand-made blade. Tip [BOSHI] obscured by abrading.
Shape; Type DAITO; SHINOGI TSUKURI. Ridge [SHINOGI] slightly high, Riidge-width [SHINOJI-JI] normal. Blade taper [FUNBARI] strong, Back; [MUNE] IHORI.
Tang [UBU] shape HA AGARI; Filemarks SUJIKAI. Back[MUNE] HIRA;Hole [M EKUGI ANA] one punched. Signature; [MEI] KAYANAMEI. KANENAMI KORE SAKV.
Hilt; JINDACHI TSUKARI type, gilt brass fittings. Brown cotton binding over blue stained sting-ray skin [SAME]. Brown officers tassle attached.
Scabbard; Black laquer over wood. 2 suspension rings, throat banded, lower band and chape of ormanental metal. All fittings brass.

Date: c. 1940s
This is a World War II naval officer’s katana blade which appears to be hand made. It was surrendered to Lt Col. Fleay, D.S.O., by Capt. Koreda in Dutch Borneo on 15 August 1945. The signature reads: ‘Kanenami made this’.

Type: KAIGUNTO
Saya: black lacquer over wood. Two ashi, kuchigane, shibabiki, and ishi dzuki of ornamental gilded brass
Tsuka: blue stained same bound with brown cotton. Brown cord with tassel attached
Fuchi/kabuto gane: gilded brass fittings en suite with scabbard
Tsuka ai: en suite
Tsuba: plain shakudo, of naga-maru-gata shape. Dimensions: 6.5 x 7.6 x 0.3 cm
Overall length: 98.0 cm
This sword is a standard World War II naval officer’s tachi mounting.
