DRESS

White muslin, one-piece dress. Bodice: Fairly high round neck with piped seam. Stitching remains indicate that either neckline was trimmed or a collar was attached. Seam down centre front, piped. 2 dart, sewn on the outside with tiny stitches. 2 'V' shaped converging panels of broderie anglaise braid, edged with drawn thread work on front. Probably bought in strips although are handworked. Repeated on back. Sleeves set into shoulder with tiny, tight gathers. Pointed sleeve petals, edged with broderie anglaise and extending down sloping back seam. Lined with stiff cotton, tightly gathered with band of broderie anglaise attached. Lining kept sleeve distended. Sleeve extends into long cuff, which would have reached over hand. Simulated cuff of 2 diagonal bands of broderie anglaise and frill at edge. Frill extends part way up wrist. Back fastening with 8 flat metal hooks, with 2 settings at waist. Skirt. Set flat into waist band, cut in one piece at front. Back also cut in one piece, set into waist band with tight gathers from approximately centre back. Hem decorated with 2 pointed frills of broderie anglaise, each topped with row of broderie anglaise on material. All hand-sewn, with examples of hemming, handstroking.
