Dr Hodgkin made spectacle frames from toothbrush handles which were split to the hole, opened out in steam, shaped and formed to spectacle frame shape and rivetted to existing arms. (a) Lenses with broken frame. (b) Slit toothbrush handle. (c) Initial split and shaping for lenses. (d) Grooved to take lenses. (e) Finished spectacles in leather case, made by Hodgkin for himself. (f) Sponge. (g) Split toothbrush handle - stage between (b) & (c)
