SWIMSUIT, male, wool

H1989.1047

Blue woollen swimming trunks with narrow cream stripe down each side. Belt loops around the top and a label on the bottom left corner at the front. The label has a white lifebuoy in the centre containing the letter 'M' in red, and white triangular sails ? on either side with the words 'SWIM' 'EASY' in red. At the right hand side on the front is a small pocket with a flap, fastened with a shell button. A narrow strip of extra fabric runs down the inside front of the garment from the top and is sewn under the crutch. There is a small white label with '36' in red at the centre back. The bathers would come to the top of the hip and have the high 'bikini' cut at the legs. In 1935 Esquire noted that blue was the most popular colour for bathing suits. The stripe down the side was also popular.
