TABLE MAT

H1989.340

The mat appears unusual in construction. It seems to have been made by plaiting many strands of cream and one or two of cream/brown two-ply wool into what appears to be a large number of plaits but is actually one long plait folded into many lines. All these are the same length, namely the width of the mat. The length of the mat is determined by the number of times the plait has been folded. It is not clear whether the ends where it has been folded are plaited or not. Each row of plaiting has been joined by plait for the length of the mat. This is in addition to the ends being joined by the plaiting. Mat has fringe at each end which is knotted into the end of the knitting. The fringe is brown/white yarn.
