FLAG, union jack, silk, WWI, 'July 19th 1919 Signed George RI/ WE Macartney Governor of WA'

H2015.198

Silk rectangular flag on metal rod, displayed horizontally. On main side, large union jack is painted in red and blue over cream silk, taking up majority of fabric. Along left hand side of union jack is an additional layer of cream silk, displaying text that runs vertically from bottom to top (text is on its side). Reads: '[ITALICS] His Majest the King's memorable message: [END ITALICS]/ "Peace has been signed, and thus ends the greatest war in history./ I join with you in thanking God."/ July 19th, 1919./ Signed George R.R./ W. W. McCartney/ Governor of W.A.' All text in typed format except for names, which appear as signatures.
Along left hand side of flag are 5 loops of silk, securing flag to metal rod. Gold plaited cord (tarnished & slightly fraying) loosely extends along length of rod, fed through holes in either end of rod and knotted. Tassels are at each end of cord, strengthened by white thread wound around.
Along right hand side of flag is gold metallic fringing, 3.5cm long.
On reverse of flag, silk is more discoloured - cream colour is much darker, and red and blue paint is more faded and slightly worn away. Several tears in the fabric are also visible, 4 of which have been secured with sticky tape. One tear, close to side of metal rod, extends entire width.
