PLANES, Moulding -10-

H1994.93.1-10

H.1994.1. Moulding plane used to cut tongue in 'tongue in groove' boards. Marked on end '44 and 481 G.Sutherland/ MELVILLECalled Match plane'.

2. Brass soled moulding plane with angled cutter iron. 'Skew Rabbet Plane' (Rabbet=Rebate) - used for cutting wide flat bottomed grooves in wood. Marked on side 'WCA', on ends 'J.H. CLAY'.

3. Ovals complex moulder. Marked on end (star/ crescent logo) 'A MATHIESON & SONS/ GLASGOW & EDINBURGH' '3/4/No 177/2'

4. DITTO - 'same markings except " " 1'

5. (Rabbet plane). Round moulding plane.

6. Astragal Moulder. Marked 'A MATHIESON & SONS/ GLASGOW & EDINBURGH' on one end and '1/4' on the other.

7. Hollow moulder (small area of burn? on one corner). Marked on side in ink '4685/U'. On end '14/W.SMITH' on other end 'WARRANTED/ JAMES REID/ ABERDEEN'.

8. Match grooving plane - steel skate? Marked on end '48' and '44/ G.SUTHERLAND/ MELVILLE'.

9. Plough (or PLOW) plane, with movable fence. 'A MATHIESON & SONS/ (star/ crescent logo) Glasgow & Edinburgh'.

10. Home-made? Moulding plane to cut round bottom groove. Cutting iron appears to be from #45 or #55 Stanley Combnation plane. No marks.

All of these moulding planes were replaced by the #45 and 55 Stanley combinations planes of 1890s -1960s.
