ALPHA BETA SET GAME

H1989.387

Cardboard box containing 25 wooden letters. a. The box states that the toy was 'DESIGNED AND MADE IN ENGLAND BY TRESCO PLASTICS LTD. / alpha-beta-set No.2 / Script & Numerals / APPROVED AND USED BY COUNTY EDUCATIONAL AUTHORITIES' It shows a picture of a girl with a board showing three words, and a boy with a board showing a sum. On the end is the following information : 'A SPECIALLY DESIGNED SET OF 65 LETTERS AND / NUMERALS WITH HOLDER FOR WORD BUILDING / AND SUM MAKING - AS USED IN SCHOOLS / A "TRESCO" PRODUCT'. On the back of the box is a sticker for : 'The Bookbox / 10 & 11 London Court / PERTH, W.A.' b. The letters are made from masonite. As there are only 25 of them it appears that they were not the original game. Additionally there are no numbers, and the form Tresco Plastics might be expected to make a plastic game. The letters almost completely fill the box, so 65 would not fit in. There is no board for them either. The toys were used by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to Teacher's College in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A. in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She also made and purchased a large collection of puppets which were used as teaching aids. These are accessioned under numbers H88/613 to H89/307 (not inclusive).
