WATERCOLOUR "Waroonga"

Inscriptions: Not signed or dated. "Waroonga" appears on hull of ship. Subject Matter: Single funnel, two masted, flying red ensign and A.U.S.N. flag. Black funnel with two white stripes. Biography: F. Dawson of Adelaide. Biographical details very scanty. Not listed in WA Post Office Directory and only appears once in SA PO Directory: "1902 Fred J. Dawson, Liddon Place, Portland. Artist as trade. May well have lived in WA - main interest was with ships running routes between Fremantle and Adelaide - see also George Bourne = similar preoccupation. Other: "Waroonga": single screw, built 1882 by A. & J. Inglis, Glasgow. Owners: British India Associated Steamers Ltd, registered Glasgow; 1889 Australasian United Steamship Navigation Co Ltd, registered Brisbane; 1900 British India S.N. Co Ltd, registered Glasgow; 1913 sold to Japan; 1926 broken up under name "Bansei Maru". Originally on London to Brisbane route via Torres Strait, by 1885 the voyage extended to Port Adelaide. In 1899 purely Australian coastal routes until returned overseas in 1900. See also CH71.25 "Barcoo".
