PITH HELMET, Pinjarra Mounted Volunteers

White Pith helmet - either a universal overseas service helmet or a typical version of dragoon helmet at home - note NSW Lancers initially adopted a white typical version of the dragoon helmet in 1885. Whether this helmet was actually worn in the 1860's and 70's is unknown as the unit was finally disbanded in 1882, welll after the introduction of the white overseas helmet in 1878. The helmet is spiked but shows no signs of any plume holders. White/yellow metal ornaments are attached - at side lion's head chin strap holders. On top standard infantry spike and floral arrangement.
in front badge of the Royal Coat of Arms. Around middle seam - brown leather band. Brown leather chin strap. Inside, green leather backing, buff leather sweatband - ventilator hole and marked 'FAWCETT'.
Tin Hat Box for pith helmet. Also W740.
Exterior is very rusted, coppered inside , has remains of a leather strap.
On front - shield shape mark for Hawkes & Co, 14 Picadilly London. also plaque for Captain Fawcett, written at anfle. Washed with methylated spirits.
