Dress, black lycra, halter neck style with knee length skirt with tail, and ruched and diamante detail, designed by 'Ruth Tarvydas', Perth, Western Australia, 1980.
H2018.152
This evening dress is made from black polyester fabric. The short fitted style has a halter
neckline formed using a dimante applique, which extends from the seam of the skirt on the
proper left and finishes at the top seam of the garment on the proper right. The fabric has
been gathered into the side seams. It has a small train through the back of the garment.
The closure is a zip in the centre back of the garment that runs the entire length of the dress,
with fabric has been gathered into the seams of this zip. The body of the dress is self-lined.
History:
This style sold in Selfridges in 1980 and featured in a parade in the store (which Ruth attended) in the
same year. As a result of the success of this range in the store Ruth opened a showroom in London.
It is part of the collection that saw Ruth's label gain international exposure and is representative of
Ruth Tarvydas' figure-hugging designs and the fashions of the 1980s.
