Dress, black polyester, long sleeved with ruching and extended tie detail, a slashed v-neckline, knee-length skirt and embellished flower detail, designed by 'Ruth Tarvydas', Perth, Western Australia, 1980.
H2018.141
This evening dress is made from a single layer of black polyester fabric, creating a sheer effect
in places. The v-shaped neckline is slashed to the waistline. The garment features a deep cowl
through the back, secured through the shoulders with a tie. The long sleeves are ruched and feature
three faux pearls at each wrist. Heavily embellished flower appliques, made from clear bugle beads
and crystals, adorn each shoulder. The skirt is gathered into the waistline and is knee-length,
featuring a small central split and is finished with a rolled hem. A godet has been added to each
side seam of the skirt and then attached to the sleeve to create a dramatic winged effect.
History:
This style was designed by Ruth Tarvydas and sold in Selfridges in London in 1980. It was featured
in a parade in-store (that Ruth attended) in the same year. As a result of the success of this range
Ruth opened a showroom in London. It is representative of Ruth Tarvydas' figure-hugging designs,
and of the fashions of the the 1980s.
