COIN, threepence, UK, 1893-1901

H1997.142

This silver threepence coin has been smoothed on the reverse so that no pattern remains visible. The obverse and size identify it as a threepence coin, it might be Maundy money. The obverse features a Veiled and Draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, and the lettering 'VICTORIA · DEI · GRA · BRITT · REGINA · FID · DEF IND · IMP ·' and the Mintmark 'TB'. This portrait of Queen Victoria also identifies a date range for coin production. The initials 'HW'(?) has been engraved in script onto the reverse of the coin and it has been holed at the top, suggesting it was used as some form of jewellery.
