WICKER TRAVELLING BASKET

H1996.454

Woven cane picnic basket, oblong, with T-shaped internal partition and hinged lid. Inside lid is a 16.5cm x 13cm piece of simulated leather wrapped around a stiffener and fastened with a metal stud in each corner. A strip of leather across its centre, stitched in 6 places, is probably intended to secure 4 pieces of cutlery. Basket has loop catch on lid corresponding with a plaited loop and pin for securing on base.
Contents:-
.1 Can basket.
.2 Kettle, tin. Round, with thin spout and flat, curved handle.
.3 Lid of kettle, tin, convex, with thin wire loop handle.
.4 Tea/sugar tin, round, with vertical divide.
.5 Lid for tea/sugar tin, with thin wire loop handle.
.6 Oblong tin with hinged lid and catch. Thin wire loop handle.
.7 Glass bottle with woven cover and screw top lid.
.8 Ceramic open-topped jar, off-white, crazed. Possibly used as a cup.
.9 Base of stove. Round, with cut-out sides and open top. Pair of wire handles on side. Kettle (.2) fits into top of stove, and the fuel tank with wick (.10) sits inside.
.10 Fuel tank. Squat, round, with small round hole in top containing a cloth wick. A screw-threaded cap fits over the wick.
.11 Spare fuel tank. Squat, round, with a small round hole on one side of the top with a screw cap for filling.
A scrap of newspaper was sandwiched between the base of the stove and fuel tank with wick (placed in supfile H.1996.454). The newspaper includes a column dated 3rd May 1918 and an advertisement 'FREE.RETURNED HEROES/ Who have lost an EYE in/ the present War, will be presented/ with an/ ARTIFICIAL EYE/ FREE OF COST./ if they call on / Mr B. The Optician...'
