SEAL PRESS & SEALS

H1992.72

A common type of seal press. This one was used by the W.A.G.R.to seal the locks on freight waggons so that the integrity of the cargo`s sec -urity could be assessed upon arrival. The lead seal is cast with an integral wire, the wire is passed through the loop of the door lock and back through a hole in the lead seal. The seal is then placed in the jaws of the press and squeezed, thereby "sealing"the cargo inside The wire must be cut to open the door. These seals / presses are still in use. This particular item was used by the W.A.G.R.at the Albany Port Authority Transit Shed, prior to the estab. of the land backed wharf. Marked on lever"E.J.BROOKS & CO.N Y / PATd DEC.7 97" The press dies are marked"W.A.G.R."and"377"respectively. There are 6 lead seals, one of which is marked by the press, the others unused
