Red paper covered wooden box with plain gold border on lid and decorative catch on the side. Lined with burgundy colour satin shirred, on top and bottom. Lid has fine black cord holders with two sets of buttons behind one and a small pouch labelled "BUTTONS" on another. There is a velvet-covered attachment on which is a safety pin. The base has a velvet band, partitioned by stitching into sections which hold two metal crochet hooks, one thick needle and a crochet hook of bone appearance. Unsecured, are two paper needle cases printed in red and gold, containing needles and marked on one side "SUPERIOR / EGG EYED / SHARPS". On the other, "NINE / NEEDLES / EGG EYED / SHARPS / 3/7". The flap has a symbol of a flying serpent and is marked "JOHN JAMES / TRADE MARK/ & SONS". Inside the case is a piece of lined paper which appears to have been torn out of a school book on which is handwritten "PRESENTED TO / VIOLET WEISHEIT / FOR BEST SEWING AND / IMPROVEMENT / PRIZE DONATED BY MR MAUGER / STATE SCHOOL BICTON / DEC 1915 / R.T.STUBBS / H.T." Violet excelled at sewing and enjoyed handwork, particularly crocheting while she was working at Arnott, Mills & Ware. See H92/0010, a Duchesse Set made about 1919.
