ARC LAMP
H1991.13
Carbon rod arc lamp used in cine projectors. The system worked by the use of two carbon rods, one held horizontally and one held vertically, each was adjustable for movement so that the gap between the tips of the rods could be regulated. As the electric current passed up the vertical rod it "arced" across the gap and passed down the horizontal rod (or vice versa) and so completed the circuit. The arc produced a brilliant light supplemented by the consumption of the carbon rods. The operator had to continuously adjust the gap by moving the rods. One set of these projectors was still being used at the Graylands Hospital cinema until the early 1980s. The lamp probably had a glass lens which is now missing.
