MEDAL, Punctual Attendance

Silver coloured attendance medal with a black swan at the centre of the obverse and lettering around the rim, "EDUCATION DEPARTMENT / WESTERN AUSTRALIA". The reverse has a decorative border and is printed "AWARDED / TO / LAURA PELLE / FOR PUNCTUAL / ATTENDANCE / EVERY SCHOOL DAY / 1905". The medal is pierced at the top and threaded with a single link of chain. Laura Pelle was born on 13 March 1891 in Paynesville, Gippsland, Victoria. She travelled to Fremantle with her family by coastal steamer and lived in Hay St (near Pier St), Perth. Between 1901 and 1905, she attended Perth Girls' School in James Street until she was 14 or 15; Miss Lilly Lowe was the headmistress. During that time, Laura was a member of the school choir. On leaving school, Laura studied at the Perth Technical College and became an accountant, working during World War I at the Y.M.C.A. Between 1939 and 1945 she was the state secretary of the Girl Guide movement in W.A. Laura, who died in 1988, was married to Robert Hanlin, and the couple had one child, Catherine.
