BACKSAW, Dovetail

The dovetail saw is a small back saw, may also have been called Gentleman's saw or Amateur's saw. This refers to a lighter saw used by gentlemen of leisure in the nineteenth century, ie. not intended for a craftsman.
It had thin rectangular steel blades stiffened on the back with a strip of iron folded over the top edge of the blade. The teeth are small and only slightly set. Used for cutting dovetails, small mitres and other fine bench work. The blade on this saw is 7 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide with 14 points per inch. It is marked with a large picture of an eagle and the words 'GERMANY/STEEL' are legible. The remainder of the inscription has been worn away with use. The handle is turned and varnished timber.
