CHINESE BASKET
CH1985.427
Used by the Chinese hawker in Camberwell, Victoria around 1916. The basket contained haberdashery items such as pins, needles, ribbons, lace etc. and was carried in two big basketware paniers at the end of a long pole. There was no public transport in outer Melbourne at that time. Chinese market gardeners were prominent in Camberwell at that time, but there is no known connection between the hawker and the market gardeners. The old Chinese hawker returned to China about 1920, to die, following tradition. The basket is of brown rattan, with a brightly-coloured fabric lining on the inside base, a reddish tassel on top and a reddish colour on the base of basket and inside upper part. (see CH85.428)
