DRESS, & Underskirt

CH1985.143

Dress of champagne coloured silk, the skirt lightly gathered to a sleeveless bodice of lawn; back-opening with small handmade button at top and drawstring at waist; hem decorated with 2 padded vouleaux, the upper one of cream satin; above the vouleaux, 14 large appliqué flower shapes in 2 forms: petals of satin, centres of silk thread drawn over wooden ring or looped silk cord. One of the former was found separate from the dress (CH85.143a) but none is missing from it; possibly the loose one decorated a spencer jacket now missing. Hand-sewn throughout.
