Centre pattern with large peony, chrysanthemum, blossom and branching tree issuing from pierced rock work. Border inside edge of leaves linked in pi and brown. Outer border of Chinese orchids (?) and other flowers, widely space In imitation of Chinese famille rose. Borders of pattern printed in black with pattern in overglaze enamels and wash. Thick greyish glaze. Mark printed in overglaze black "SPODE" on imitation Chinese seal mark \ " Stone China". Patte number in puce "2407". Ref. Godden, Encyclopaedia, page 589, no. 3651, 1805- 1 but Copeland, Spode. Willow Pattern, 1980, page 167 argues dates from 1812-33. Pattern illustrated page 152, pl. 10, although description does not tally.
