TABLE RUNNER, With Punto in Aria Insertions

CH1980.118

White. Fine linen with insertions at each end of punto in aria and edged all around with punto in aria. Sections of threads have been drawn out and finished off with drawn thread work. The lace has been worked directly from the fabric, possibly using the drawn threads. At each end are two narrow insertions joined by sections of drawn thread work to a wider insertion. This includes figures, possibly of insects (bees?) interspersed with other motif. Patterns worked in squares. Stitches include close stitch, overworked with buttonhole and space buttonhole (all are varieties of buttonhole). Another narrow insertion all around edge with more drawn thread work and hemmed edge. Pointed scallops of punto in aria at each end and smaller edging on long sides. Larger points finished with tassels of the threads. Christie's dated in auction catalogue as 17th Century. Ref. VC Bath, 'Lace', 1974, pp. 69-75.
