CONVICT UNIFORM
CH1985.118.a-b
Convict uniform of coarse wool tabby, particoloured yellow and black, comprising jacket and trousers:
(a) Jacket: particoloured halves, right front black, left front yellow etc; body made in 4 pieces; small stand-up collar, self lined; black patch pocket on left front; traces of cloth patch pocket inside; 6 competently worked buttonholes; 2 white metal buttons, stamped on rim 'BEST RING EDGE'; curved sleeves, particoloured top and bottom halves. Facings stitched all around garment; internal seams felled. Stamped with broad arrows, black on yellow fabric, orange-red on black fabric, on upper sleeves and both halves of the back. A number '10507' is coarsely worked in thick white thread left lower back.
(b) Trousers: particoloured halves, left front black, right front yellow etc; buttons and buttonholes on waistband for braces; 4 button concealed fly, competantly worked buttonholes, 3 dark brown dyed bone buttons; waist and fly facings of unbleached linen; open outside seams, each with 8 white bone buttons on concealed button stand; the buttonhole stand of canvas apparently a later replacement; ankle ends are open on inside seam, crudely reinforced with older fabric, in manner of accommodating leg irons. Stamped with broad arrows in orange-red on both colours, about knee level on each side of each leg. Whole outfit is machine and hand-sewn.
The trousers and jacket do not appear to be an original pair. Indeed, the trousers appear to be entirely re-made, though from old and genuine material, possibly for display by the Police Department whence they came?
