Depicts three-masted sailing ship, partially rigged, two rows of cannon within sight of land. Foreground shows a Cutter with three soldiers and a helmsman. Both showing starboard side. Other sailing craft and white cliffs visible in the distance. Signed and dated: 'Wm. Clifton/ May 1843', Sepia. upper right corner of reverse. Both also appear on mount: 'by Wm Clifton 1843', lower right corner pencil.
