The medal is in the shape of an artists palette. Engraved on the surface: 'Reward of merit/ presented to/ William c. Clifton/ for his studious attention and progress in/ drawing/ at the Revd. Edwd. Trimmer's/ Putney School/ Decr, 1835/ John Whichelo(?) master.' Reverse-engraved: 'W.C.C.' inside a laurel wreath. Silver stamp.
