SAMPLER, Frances Habgood

Sampler worked on linen with silk thread, 'June S R 1859/AAAABBCCDDEEFFG/HHHJJKKLLMMNNOPPP/RSTUVWXYZ1234567/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv/wxyz.89102030405060/FrancesAHabgood.Perth/Western Australia'. Decorated with stitched hearts at top two corners and various stitching styles between lines of text including zigags and stylised double leaf-pattern above name. Bottom row of front has eight geometric shapes in various colours. All with pale pink stitched border.

This sampler is indicative of the tpes of samplers produced in British schools during the nineteenth century although this example does not list a school name.(ref 'Shire Album 30/Samplers', Pamela Clabburn, 1977 pp. 12-13.) One dividing row of stitching showing chain link type shapes is similar to those found back in samplers dating to the early 1700s (ref 'Samplers', Pamela Clabburn, 1998, Sampler 17, p 16.) The double leaf from a central stem border design was popular in the united Kingdom around the 1850s when this piece was produced (ref 'Samplers', Pamela Clabburn, 1998, Sampler 50, p 36.).
The sampler as a popular form of needlework had died by 1900. By this time numbers of needlework magazines were published at low prices supplying patterns and instructions for all embroidery needs. (Ref: Samplers, Averil Colby, 1984, p. 223).
