SPARK PLUG TESTER

H1991.196

Spark plug tester. Provision is made on the LHS top of machine to insert spark plug in hole and sandblast electrode. This is done by moving a small lever to 'ABRASIVE/ BLAST'. Once electrode is clean of carbon deposits, the lever is moved up to 'AIR/ BLAST' which blows the electrode clean. The plug is then threaded into the appropriate sized hole in the RHS front of machine and an alligator clip lead is placed on plug cap. By adjusting movable knob on RHS top and watching spark through prism mirror, a reading on guage on RHS top can be made - this states whether the plug has been able to spark on appropriate pressure and indicates if a new plug is required. These machines also had an air attachment to provide pressure on the plug, thus it has pressure graduations on the guage. The plug would often spark at normal air pressure but would fail under pressure; as it would be in the engine. Thus the plugs were tested under pressure (about 120 p.s.i.). Markings on front: 'SPARK PLUG/ CHAMPION/ SERVICE', on top LHS: 'air/ blast/ abrasive/ blast', on guage: 'SPARKLING... ARATOR/ INSTALL NEW/ CHAMPIONS/ FAIR GOOD', 'CHAMPION/ LBS/ KILOS'.
