TOBACCO JAR, jarrah?, hand turned, Hookum Chan, c.1876

[1] Stout, small, fluted, varnished wood, jarrah?, hand turned, Tobacco Jar bowl and stand. Liqueur glass-shaped, with wide base (triangular chip out of base) and single groove carved before stem. Narrow stem with wood fractured at junction with bowl. Bulbous bowl, fluted form stem to exaggerated rim. Rim inset at top to allow lid [2] to fit snugly within. Wood imperfections (small knots and indents) throughout. Inside: bowl carved with two sets of double concentric circles, another set where stem meets bowl, internally. Tobacco stained. Underside: stained, concentric circles outer rim to centre, black mark and white residue in centre circle grooves.
[2] Inverted spinning top shaped, with round base, fluted top, dark stained lid for hand turned, jarrah?, tobacco jar. Thick base (fits into rim of jar bowl), with damaged, chipped convex rim. Fluted to ‘spinning top’ shaped stem, wood cracked where stem meets handle [3]. Single circular groove atop rim, where stem rises from centre, with circle around plug. Grain of wood clearly visible. Lid stain darker than bowl [1].
[3] Round, two-toned, stained wood, jarrah?, with metal screw/thread secure, handle for tobacco jar lid. Rusted threaded metal, screw?, in centre of bottom of handle, to thread/screw into jar lid. Two toned stain of lighter yellow/gold and darker jarrah timber colour. Wood carved with undulating grooves, concave darker timber on the bottom, to convex lighter centre with crazed lighter stain, back to concave darker timber on top. Top varnish crazed, multi-coloured timber stain visible. Underside: uneven stain residue around metal screw. Circle carved around centre of handle.
